What is a Randomized List?
A randomized list is a publicly known BIP39 list of 2048 words in a randomized order. Every recovery seed is made of this BIP39 list.
You can download the list randomizer template to generate your unique randomized list.
What Are the Advantages of Using Randomized List?
1. Your Recovery Seed Is Fully Hidden and Protected
You do not need to store your recovery seed anywhere. This means nobody will be able to find or steal it.
Once you translate your recovery seed into your unique randomized list and its corresponding position form as shown below, you do not need your original recovery seed anymore.
With your randomized list and position form stored in different locations, you will be able to regain your original recovery seed later if needed.
2. You Do Not Need to Use a Passphrase
Passphrase protection is a great security feature, but you might not want to use it (e.g., you might want to avoid entering your passphrase each time you connect your hardware wallet).
As using recovery seed without any protection is risky, but you can protect your seed with the randomized list instead.
3. You Can Still Access Your Hardware Wallet Even If Your Randomized List is Lost
If your recovery seed is protected with a passphrase and you lose the passphrase, your digital assets are lost for good.
There is no way to access your assets without your passphrase even if you still have your physical hardware wallet in your hand.
On the other hand, you will be still able to access your digital assets with your hardware wallet even if you lose your randomized list.
4. You’ll Have Access To Your Recovery Seed From Anywhere
This might be especially useful on border or airport security checks when traveling to dangerous countries.
How to Protect Your Recovery Seed Backup with Randomized List
To protect your seed, translate the original recovery seed into your unique randomized list and its corresponding position form.
Once this is complete, you can create multiple safe backups with the randomized list and position form stored in different places as depicted below.
These backups are safe because whoever finds them can’t get any benefit out of them and will not be able to steal your funds.
The position form without the randomized list has no meaning, and vice versa.
Check out the examples below to understand how it works in more detail.
Translating Recovery Seed into a Randomized List and Position Form
1. Original Recovery Seed
Let’s say this is the original recovery seed you need to translate into your unique randomized list and its corresponding position form.
2. Your Unique Randomized List
You can use the list randomizer template to generate your unique randomized list.
As the randomized list itself (without the position form) is just worthless numbers without any meaning, you can upload it online without worry.
3. Corresponding Position Form
Once you have your unique randomized list ready, completing position form is simple.
All you have to do is to fill-in the corresponding positions of your original recovery seed words in the randomized list you’ve just created.
For example, you can see that the WORD 1 in the original recovery seed is SURGE.
When you check the randomized list, you can find this word (SURGE) in the 6th position.
That is why you write down number 6 for the WORD 1 in your position form.
In the same way, you complete the position form for all your seed words as below.
Regaining Your Recovery Seed from Randomized List and Position Form
To regain the original recovery seed, you need both the randomized list and its corresponding position form.
Let’s check this on the example below.
This is your position form.
And this is your randomized list.
By combining these two, you can regain your original recovery seed.
For example, you can see that there is position 6 for the WORD 1 on the position form.
When you check the randomized list, you can find the word SURGE on the 6th position.
That is why the WORD 1 in the original recovery seed is SURGE.
Test the Recovery Seed You Regained
The golden rule is: Always test your backups. Always.
That’s why we recommend you test the recovery seed you regained from your randomized list and its corresponding position form.
